What is given information and what is new information?

Given information is assumed to be familiar to the receiver of the message because it was explicitly provided in the preceding linguistic context or implicitly provided in view of the situational context or the shared cultural background. New information is assumed to be unfamiliar to the receiver and hence is the most important part of the utterance.
