sentences
A sentence consists of one or more clauses. A one-clause sentence is termed a “simple sentence’’; a sentence made up of two or more clauses is called either a “ compound sentence” or a “ complex sentence”. To perform different functions, a sentence can be a statement, a question, a command, or an exclamation.
For example:
Jay throws a stone at the window. I'll scream. (two simple sentences)
Jay throws a stone at the window and I’ll scream. (two coordinate main clauses in one sentence)
If you throw a stone at the window, I’ll scream. (one subordinate clause and one main clause within one and the same sentence)
