Were-subjunctive
The were-subjunctive is the smallest grammatical category because it has only one form— were. It is used with all subjects regardless of their person distinctions, thus formally contrasting with the indicative forms of be. For example: If only she were here./ Suppose he were to fail./ If I were you, I wouldn’t tell her the news.
