Define the tenor and the vehicle, and illustrate how the tenor arid the vehicle relate to each other in similes and metaphors, by analyzing the following two sentences. (1)The girl looks like her mother. (2)The girl looks like an angel.

The tenor refers to the creature,idea or object to be compared to something else;the vehicle refers to the medium through which something is expressed or displayed.In similes or metaphors,the tenor and the vehicle must represent things of different categories. There is no simile or metaphor in sentense(1),for the girl and her mother are both human beings,while sentence(2) is metaphoric.In similes or metaphors the tenor and the vehicle must have similartise.In sentence(2),the girl is compared to an angel.Apparently,there are some similarities between the girl and an angel,for example,beauty.
