The English speaking people apologize more often and on more occasions than the Chinese people. They say, Excuse me when they need to pass in front of others, to leave a party or the dinner table or when they want to excuse themselves from company. While talking with others, they say it when they need to answer the phone or a door bell and even when they sneeze. They say it when they want to cause others’ attention so as to start to talk with them, as in Excuse me. But could you tell me the way to the nearest hotel? They say, I beg you pardon when they fail to catch what their interlocutors have said. They say, I’m sorry when they are a couple of minutes late for an appointment or when they realize they are in somebody’s way. They say, I’m terribly / awfully sorry when they bump into others or step on others’ foot.
