The Noble & Cooley Drum Company was started in 1854 by James P Cooley and Silas Noble.The men began making drums in the kitchen of Noble’s farmhouse. They had a number of different products, but the one that sold best was a toy drum.
Until the early 1900s, they made the toy drums from wood, but after that they began to use a kind of metal called tin. By the 1950s, the company was making more than 1000 toy drum sets a day.
The company has changed a lot but it is still successful today.It is now run by Jay Jones, the great-great-great grandson of James P Cooley. These days the company is famous for an expensive wooden drum called a snare drum, which is used by many well-known musicians.This drum is made by hand on a special machine that was built more than a century ago.
Jay’s son Nick, 25, joined the company three years ago. ‘There’s a lot of history here and it’s fun to be part of it,’ he says.
The company’s next project is to open a museum. Visitors will be able to see how a toy drum was made 150 years ago and actually help make one too.
The toy metal drum was cheaper to make than the wooden drum.
