What are the differences between status Indians and nonstatus Indians in Canada?
People legally defined as Indians are known as status Indians. They belong to bands and live on reserves that are largely self-governing. Indians who have chosen to give up their status rights or who lost them through intermarriage with non-Indians are called nonstatus Indians.
