What does the Governor-General formally do?
The Governor-General formally summons and dissolves Parliament, gives royal assent to bills passed by Parliament, and performs other executive functions. After a general election, the Governor-General calls on the leader of the party that holds the most seats in the House of Commons to become prime minister and form a government. If no party holds a majority, the Governor-General selects the party leader most likely to gain the support of sufficient members of the opposition to keep control of the Commons.
