McCarthy and full-scale, anti-Communist hysteria in the United States.②McCarthy started his campaign by saying on February 9, 1950 that he had the names of over 200 Communists in the State Department.
③However, he couldn’t point out a single one at that time.④McCarthy’s “big lie” tactic worked.⑤It frightened a large number of ordinary Americans and people began to feel that it would be safer to conform than to disagree with the majority.
Later he turned against General Marshall and Eisenhower in 1951, accusing them of helping the Russians in their drive for world domination.
