What is the House of Lords?

It originated in the 11th century with the councils of nobles and high clergy who were the closest advisers to the monarch. The Lords was at one time the more powerful of the two houses, but over the centuries its powers were whittled away (gradually reduced). It corresponds in some respects to the United States Senate, but its authority is much less than the Senate.
