1）The expansionist movement produced a theory of “Manifest Destiny.”
2）This phrase first appeared in an article written by a Democratic politician John L. O’Sullivan who criticized the policy of other nations of “hampering our power, limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our manifest destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.”
3）The meaning of “Manifest Destiny” is threefold: (1) the inevitability of the founding of the United States of America; (2) the legitimacy of the expansion of American territory; (3) the spread of American democracy being the task of American people who were chosen to do the Lord’s work.
