St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day is a particularly important day in Ireland, held on March 17 honoring the country's patron saint. Whereas overseas the holiday has become a boisterous, largely secular celebration of all things Irish, in Ireland it is a religious occasion often observed by saying prayers for peace, especially in neighboring Northern Ireland. Nevertheless, some of the practices celebrated abroad have been adopted locally in the interest of tourism.
