Comment on the differences between synonyms by analyzing the following groups.
(1)work, toil
(2)policeman, constable, bobbycop
Synonyms may differ in degree of intensity. For group (1), work and toil are both work, but the former is a general term having no special implications as “light” or “heavy”, “mental” or “physical”, while the latter usually suggests “heavy and tiring work”, associated more with manual than mental labour.
Synonyms may also differ in connotation. For group (2), policeman and constable are stylistically neutral, yet the former is used both in British English and American English while the latter is only British.Bobby is colloquial, used only in British English and cop is slangy.
