A Rose for Emily is one of Faulkner' s short stories. Discuss the character of Emily Grierson and how this character is depicted.

A. Emily Grierson is a symbol of old values, standing for tradition, duty and past glory. She is an eccentric spinster who refuses to accept the passage of time, or the inevitable change and loss that accompanies it.
B. As a descendent of the Southern aristocracy. Emily is typical of those in Faulkner's Yoknapatwapha stories who are the symbols of the Old South but the prisoner of the past.
Examples from the novel:
(1)Dominated by her father's rigid ideas of social status, she cannot get married during her life time.
(2)She carries her head high in dignity as the last Grierson though the whole community believes that she has fallen.
(3)She pays no tax and buys poison but offers no explanation;
(4)She refuses to co-operate with modernization in the postal service.
(5)Barricaded in her house, Emily has frozen the past to protect her dreams.
(6)In her relationship with her sweetheart, she demonstrates the deformed personality and abnormality.
