A. THE TERM "THE LOST GENERATION" WAS FIRST USED BY GERTRUDE STEIN, AND THEN WAS QUOTED BY HEMINGWAY IN HIS NOVEL THE SUN ALSO RISES. STEIN WAS ONE OF THE LEADERS OF A GROUP OF AMERICAN EXPATRIATES LIVING IN PARIS. THEY WERE CAUGHT IN WWI, DISILLUSIONED AND DISGUSTED. THEY BEGAN TO WRITE FROM THEIR OWN EXPERIENCES IN THE WAR. THEY EXPERIMENTED ON NEW MODES OF THOUGHT AND EXPRESSION.
B. THE TERM MEANS THIS GENERATION HAD LOST THE BEAUTIFUL SENSE OF THE PAST, REJECTING THE FORMER IDEALS AND VALUES. THEY WERE LOST IN DISILLUSIONMENT AND SPIRITUAL VOID.
C. BESIDES GERTRUDE STEIN AND ERNEST HEMINGWAY, THE IMPORTANT FIGURES OF THIS MOVEMENT WERE EZRA POUND, E.E. CUMMINGS, F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, ROBERT FROST, ETC.
