Of the two media of language, speech and writing, which is more basic in the view of modern linguistics? Explain the reasons.
Of the two media of language speech is more basic than writing The reasons are as follows：
(1) First, in linguistic evolution, speech is prior to writing. The writing system of any language is always "invented" by its users to record speech when the needs arise.
(2) Second, in everyday communication, speech plays a greater role than writing in terms of the amount of information conveyed.
(3) Third, speech is always the way in which every native speaker acquires his mother tongue, but writing is learned and taught later at school. (1P5)
